Juan Santamaría International Airport is known as the San Jose International Airport and is the first and oldest airport in Costa Rica. His name was in honor of the brave drummer boy Juan Santamaria, who was killed in the Battle of Rivas in 1856 defending his country against invading American forces of William Walker. He was the main airport in Costa Rica until 1955. Juan Santamaría International Airport is just outside of downtown San Jose, about 20 minutes drive from most hotels in the sector.

Most planes landing here are international and the U.S., this airport also serves as a terminal for domestic flights land here, including KLM, Delta, British Airways, Continental, Cubana, Mexicana, Iberia and American West.

It is run by the private company Alterra Partners, who has a contract for managing and maintaining the airport for twenty years.
