Golfito is along its main road that runs between the bay and the forested hills that surround it. Two are clearly distinguished areas: the north and the SUL. In the northern sector is the airport and the warehouse, a huge complex of shops full of appliances, electronics and items of import. In 1990 Golfito was declared a free port by e! government of Costa Rica. In this lies the old Mexican quarter, with wooden houses surrounded by gardens. The south, known as the Pueblo Civil, is much more popular in a noisy environment accumulate hotels, bars and restaurants.
Taxis and local buses run up and down the main road linking the north with the south of the city.
PROXIMITY
Near the city are well-visited beaches of Cocoa and Puntarenitas, which is reached by boat. Across the Coto Colorado river are those of Zancudo and Pavones, very suitable for the practice of surfing. Playa Zancudo is a long beach of fine sand located about 15 km. south of Golfito, between the Pacific and the mouth of the Colorado River. For its good fishing and facilities for swimming and surfing beginners, it is very crowded during the dry season for local and foreign. There are plenty of hotels, cabins and more are being built at top speed, but the beach is very long to find lonely places. During the rainy season is very quiet.
The mouth of the Coto Colorado River is rich in mangroves.
