Canton Perez Zeledon is number 19 in the province of San José (Costa Rica). Located in the Region Brunca (south). Your header and main city is San Isidro de El General, which has a population exceeding 70,000 inhabitants. The canton is bounded on the north by the cantons of El Guarco, Paraíso and Turrialba in the province of Cartago and the Canton de Dota in the province of San José, on the east by the canton of Talamanca in the province of Limón, on the south by the Canton of Buenos Aires in the Puntarenas province and the west by the cantons of Osa and Aguirre in the same province.

  Details [edit] Perez Zeledon is one of the most populous cantons of Costa Rica, exceeding 120,000 inhabitants. It has a literacy rate of 90% to 92% (less than 96% of the country), which is not strange for being a rural area.


  Geography [edit] Canton is located geographically located in the Valle del General-Coto (second largest of the Costa Rican territory) and is part of the watershed of the Rio Grande Terra, where the river tributary General, which the valley takes its name.

Skirting the canton there are two significant orographic accidents of geography of Costa Rica, both north and east is the Cordillera de Talamanca and West Row Costeña. Southwest of the valley there is a depression that is out of the river and General joins the western sector of the valley to the east.

  History [edit] In pre-Columbian times, the area was inhabited by Perez Zeledon indigenous group of Brunca. The first expeditions to this land was made in 1565 and were led by the conquistador Juan Vasquez de Coronado.

In 1861, the Constitutional Congress of Costa Rica enacted a law by which it is gratified with five thousand pesos who opened a path to the villages and Térraba Boruca.

In 1863, Don Cornelius Monge-neighbor Desamparados-left San Cristóbal, Santa María de Dota crossed and Copey, arrived at River Valley General and continued down the river to the river Térraba General.

In 1883, a decree was granted to Don and his son Cornelius Monge seventy chivalry of vacant land to build a road between Santa Maria de Dota and Valley General, however, failed to fully complete the work.

In 1868, Pedro Calderón, a native of San Ramon de Alajuela, formed a government contract to make way from the village of La Estrella, located south of the current El Guarco Guangzhou-up and Térraba Boruca (now Canton of Buenos Aires Puntarenas). In this way became known as "the bite of Calderon."

The name of the canton is a tribute to Pedro Perez Zeledon josefina (1854-1930).

1. January 1932 was held the first meeting of the council of Perez Zeledon, composed of owners regidores Nazario Segura Madrigal (Chairman), Jaime Alice Tabash (Vice President), Enrique Taull (municipal secretary) and Jose Montero Rodriguez (political leader) and Carlos Quesada Gamboa.

In 1943 was opened the water pipe and the first lighting, the latter through an electric plant owned by Don Joaquin Barrantes.

In 1948, during the Civil War 48, the city of San Isidro del General and around the home of the bloodiest moments of the war, and there are reminders of the fallen in battle, both in the City Park, including near the bridge over the Rio San Isidro.

In 1964 he built the Inter-American Highway, which crosses the canton of Perez Zeledon, which offer excellent development opportunities for a region that showed a subsistence economy, as the lack of roads made it difficult to communicate with the rest of the country.

  Education [edit] During the administration of Esquivel Ibarra (1902-1906) established the first school, which later became known as the current school March 12, 1948. In 1953 he opened a new high school. In 1962 during the administration Echandi Jimenez, the school became the Liceo Unesco.
